A Weekend of Practice and Study with Zen teacher and author, Richard Reishin Collins

IT'S NOT ABOUT YOU or is it?
A Weekend of Practice and Study with Zen teacher and author, Richard Reishin Collins

You sometimes hear students speak of “my” zazen or “my” practice, as though Zen practice concerns only them, or even worse that it is something they have some ownership or control over, as though it is up to them alone. This phrase “my practice” is insidious because it assumes that it is about you yourself alone. The more one practices, the more one realizes that “you” are just the beginning. —Richard Collins, No Fear Zen, 22.

This is a weekend for all beginners, whether they have a long term, regular meditation practice or not, and with whatever spiritual tradition they align. The opportunity to visit, deepen or revisit practice as if for the first time is essential at every stage of the Path.

Please join Richard Reishin Collins and other friends for this rare program of talks (teisho), discussions (mondo) and sitting-practice periods (zazen) in the desert sanctuary of Triveni Ashram, Paulden, Arizona. No experience is necessary. Bring an open heart/mind and the willingness to start from zero.

Appearance Day Celebration

Appearance Day is a three-day, celebratory event held every year on Lee’s ashrams. At Triveni Ashram, this the time when the guru's birthday (November 18) and mahasamadhi (death day, November 16) are traditionally honored with the experiential invocation of powerful spaces through ritual, meditation, talks, feasting, chanting, music, seva (service), and spontaneous moments of communion.

We request that all onsite participants in the Appearance Day Celebration week of November 12-18 (whether vaccinated or not) test negative for Covid within three days of coming to the Ashram. This includes coming to meals only or any single event indoors or out. The Ashram residents will be following the protocol as well. Your Life as Story: The Transformational Power of Memoir. A writing workshop with Mary Angelon Young & Regina Sara Ryan 2

“Before the last candle dies, I’ll tell my tale….”     —Edward Carey

You have an inner well-spring of stories to tell…  about being lost and then found; about a moment of insight or clarity or a night of dark despair; about finding a sense of purpose through times when you were challenged, discouraged, or disillusioned, when you were confused, grieving or longing for love; about a beloved teacher, mentor, or friend; about breakthroughs, personal renewal, or a moment of grace when you were touched by the Ineffable.

Follow the pathways of your life through the contemplative practice of writing memoir to discover the meaningful patterns behind people, places, and events.

This workshop is designed to help you digest and metabolize your experience and retrieve those essential stories, however buried or hidden, that constellate the patterns and purposes of your unique journey through life.  In this introduction to memoir writing, we will explore:

*  Options and styles of memoir—you choose!

*  Storycraft—the key elements of spinning a great tale.

*  Truth-telling and dealing with the dark side.

*  Paths taken and paths not taken.

*  Making it happen—practical work.

We welcome everyone who has ever considered writing a memoir:

  • beginners with no formal training or previous writing experience

  • those currently in process with writing their story for personal development

  • those aiming for a readership through publication.

Regina Sara Ryan is a professional writer and managing editor for Hohm Pressrsr. Author of numerous books, including the classic Wellness Workbook; Praying Dangerously; and the account of a south Indian saint, Only God: A Biography of Yogi Ramsuratkumar. Regina worked closely with her spiritual teacher, Lee Lozowick, for nearly thirty years, and has written extensively about her life in apprenticeship with him, as well as about her life as a Catholic nun. Regina serves as a writing coach to young and old.

Mary Angelon Young is a writer, traveler, and teacher. She is the author of eleven published books of non-fiction (including biographies of her lineage gurus) and three historical novels. She has served as senior editor for the spiritual journals, Tawagoto and more recently, Sahaja, for over thirty years. For the past ten years Mary has given workshops on creativity and writing as inner work for personal transformation. Her personal memoir, Caryapada: Wandering Songs, is currently a work-in-progress.
